Dry, Rough Heels & Elbows:
Causes & What Helps

When we talk about skincare, most of us immediately think about ur face.

But over the past few weeks, I’ve been asking a different question.

What about the rest of our skin?

And this week we went right down to two areeas many of us tend to ignore until they start demanding attention:

Our heels and elbows.

If you’ve ever moisturized your heels over and over and wondered why they still feel rough, there’s a reason.

Sometimes moisture is only part of what our skin needs.

Why Do Heels and Elbows Get So Rough?

Think abut what our heels go through every day.

We stand on them. We walk on them. They rub against shoes. They experience pressure and friction.

Our elbows experience friction and repeated movement too, and many of us lean on them without even realizing we’re doing it.

Over tme, the outer layer of skin in these areas can become thicker, while dead surface skin can accumulate.

Add dryness to the equation, and we can end up with heels and elbows that feel rough, thick, flaky or uncomfortable.

And as our skin changes with age, dryness can become even more noticeable.

Why Moisturizer May Not Be Enough

If the surface of the skin has a buildup of dry, dead cells, continually applying moisturizer may not address everythimg that’s contributing to that rough texture.

That’s where exfoliation comes in.

Exfoliation helps remove dead cells from the surface of the skin.

Then we can follow with moisture to help keep the newly smoothed skin feeling soft and comfortable.

That’s why I like to remember two simple words:

SMOOTH + HYDRATE

Step One: Smooth

One option I use is Smoothing Body Scrub.

It’s designed to help exfoliate dull, dry skin and remove dead surface buildup and impurities.

Its ingredients include volcanic ash for physical exfoliation, along with skin conditioning ingredients such as ceramides, shea butter, Nangai Oil, sodium hyaluronate and coconut oil.

For your heels and elbows, the goal isn’t aggressive scrubbing.

Gentle, consistent care is much more my style.

Our skin doesn’t need to be punished into behaving!

Step Two: Hydrate

After exfoliating, I want to put moisture back into the skin.

That’s where Advanced Hydration Body Lotion comes in.

It’s formula includes ingredients such as:

Ceramide NP
Shea Butter
Nangai Oil
Sodium Hyaluronate
French Plum Seed Oil
Jojoba Seed Oil

These ingredients help hydrate, nourish and support the skin’s moisture barrier.

And there’s something I particilarly like about this pairing:

Advanced Hydration Body Lotion is recommended for use after the Smoothing Body Scrub.

Smooth first.

Hydrate second.

Simple.

Can I Use the Lotion Without the Scrub?

Absolutely.

Not everyone has the same skin concerns.

If your skin is primarily dry and doesn’t have a lot of rough surface buildup, regular moisturizing may be exactly where you need to start.

And I already know this lotion has some devoted fans.

I have one customer who loves Advanced Hydration Body Lotion so much that she goes through it like crazy!

That’s always a pretty good sign.

If your heels or elbows feel particularly rough, however, adding appropriate exfoliation before moisturizing may help address both sides of the problem.

What About the Heel & Elbow Cream I Talked About?

Here’s where this week’s story became rather funny.

I had some Heel & Elbow Softening Cream in my inventory and hadn’t needed to reorder it for quite some time.

So while preparing this week’s series, I didn’t initially realize it was no longer available.

Oops!!

As soon as I discovered that, I told everyone following the series.

And then I went looking at what we currently have available.

That’s how I came back to this very simple two-step approach.

Smoothing Body Scrub + Advanced Hydration Body Lotion.

In some ways, the little mistake reinforced one of the most important things I want women to learn from me.

Understand Your Skin Before You Choose a Product

Products come an go.

Formula’s change.

New skincare innovations arrive.

But when you understand what your skin needs, you’re better equipped to make good choices even when a favourite product disappears.

That’s why I don’t want the Be Ageless Weekly Skin Concern Series to become:

“Here’s a product. Buy it.”

I want it to be:

“Here’s what happening with your skin. Here’s why. Now let’s talk about what might help.”

There’s a big difference.

A Simple Routine You Can Actually Follow

If rough heels or elbws are bothering you, you don’t need to create another complicated beauty routine.

Start simply.

1. Smooth
Gentle exfoliate areas where rough, dry surface skin has accumulated.

2. Be consistent
Give. your skin regular care rather than waiting untll it becomes extremely dry or rough.

That’s it.

Because the best routine isn’t necessarily the one with the most products.

It’s the one you’ll actually do.

Healthy Skin Doesn’t Stop at Your Jawline

That’s become one of my biggest lessons as we’ve moved into body skincare.

We spend so much time caring for the skin people see first, which is our face.

But our arms, hands, legs, elbows, heels and feet have carried us through decades of life too.

They deserve some attention.

At 77, I’m not trying to erase the years.

I’m taking care of the skin that’s carried me through them.

And sometimes that starts with something as simple as:

Smooth. Hydrate. Repeat.

Not Sure Where to Start?

If you’re not sure what your skin needs, I’m always happy to help.

And remember.

You don’t have to do everything today. You just need to start.

With gratitude,
Diana Winsor
