Dry, Thirsty Body Skin: Why It Happens as We Age and What Helps

When we talk about skincare, where does your mind immediately go?

Probably your face.

That’s certainly been true for me.

I’ve spent years being consistent with my facial skincare, cleansing, treating, hydrating and moisturizing.

But lately I’ve been asking myself a different question:

What about the rest of my skin?

Our arms, legs, shoulders, hands and the rest of our body can experience dryness too.

And as we age, many of us begin to notice that our body skin doesn’t feel quite as soft, supple or comfortable as it once did.

So why does that happen, and what can we do about it?

Why Does Our Body Skin Become Drier as We Age?

Our skin has a natural protective barrier.

I like to picture it as a brick wall.

The skin cells are the bricks, while natural lipids, including ceramides, help act like the mortar between them.

One of the jobs of this barrier is to help keep moisture from escaping.

As our skin changes with age, it may produce less of some of the natural oils and lipids that help keep it feeling soft and moisturized.

That can contribute to skin that feels:

  • Dry
  • Tight
  • Rough
  • Flaky
  • Less supple
  • Uncomfortable

And aging isn’t the only factor.

Hot showers, cold weather, indoor heating, air conditioning, environmental exposure and harsh cleansing products can all contribute to dry skin.

Hydration and Moisturization Aren’t Quite the Same Thing

This is something I think is really helpful to understand.

When our skin feels dry, we often think:

“I need some lotion.”

But our skin may benefit from several different types of support.

Hydrating ingredients help attract or provide water to the skin.

Moisturizing and conditioning ingredients help soften the skin.

And barrier supporting ingredients help support the protective outer layer that keeps moisture from escaping too easily.

For mature body skin, I like looking at the whole picture.

Ingredients I Look for in Body Care

Once you understand what dry skin needs, ingredient lists start making a lot more sense.

Ceramides

Ceramides are lipids naturally found in our skin and are an important part of the skin’s moisture barrier.

Ceramides are part of that “mortar” helping support the barrier between the cells.

That’s why I like seeing ceramides in products designed for dry skin.

Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium hyaluronate is a form of hyaluronic acid.

It’s a humectant, which means it helps attract and retain water.

We hear a lot about hyaluronic acid in facial skincare, but hydration isn’t something only our face needs.

Shea Butter and Nourishing Oils

Ingredients such as shea butter and botanical oils can help moisturize, soften and condition dry skin.

For me, the ideal body care formula isn’t simply about making my skin feel slippery for a few minutes.

I want ingredients that help my skin feel genuinely comfortable, soft and cared for.

My Simple Approach: Smooth. Hydrate. Moisturize.

After spending the last few weeks paying much more attention to body skincare, I’ve simplified what I’ve learned into three words:

SMOOTH. HYDRATE. MOISTURIZE.

And no, you don’t necessarily need to do all three every day.

1. Smooth When Your Skin Needs It

Sometimes dryness comes with rough surface buildup.

That’s where exfoliation can be helpful.

Smoothing Body Scrub is one option I use when my skin needs that exfoliating step.

It helps buff away dry surface skin and impurities while also containing skin-conditioning ingredients.

I especially like the idea of exfoliating first and then following with moisturizer.

Smooth first. Moisturize second.

2. Hydrate When Your Skin Feels Thirsty

One of my newer body-care favourites is Climate Control Recovery Body Mist.

I think of this as my easy, lightweight hydration step.

It contains ingredients including Marimoist®, Abyssine® and aloe vera to help hydrate, soothe and refresh the skin.

It’s particularly convenient because I can simply mist it onto my body and get on with my day.

And because so many of my customers already know and love Climate Control for the face, I explain this one very simply:

Climate Control for your face. Climate Control Recovery Body Mist for the rest of you.

3. Moisturize When Your Skin Needs Something Richer

When my body skin needs richer moisturization, I look to Advanced Hydration Body Lotion.

Its formula contains ingredients including:

  • Ceramide NP
  • Sodium hyaluronate
  • Shea butter
  • Nangai Oil
  • French plum seed oil
  • Jojoba seed oil

Together, these types of ingredients help hydrate, soften, condition and support the skin’s moisture barrier.

And I already know this lotion has some devoted fans.

I have one customer who loves it so much that she goes through it like crazy!

Sometimes that’s one of the best testimonials a product can receive.

She simply loves using it and doesn’t want to be without it.

Body Recovery Mist or Body Lotion?

I’ve been asked where these products fit together.

My answer is:

They don’t have to compete.

Climate Control Recovery Body Mist provides an easy, lightweight way to hydrate and refresh the skin.

Advanced Hydration Body Lotion provides a richer moisturizing step when skin needs more.

Some days you may want one.

Other days your skin may benefit from the other.

And depending on your skin and how it feels, you may enjoy using both.

That’s why I keep coming back to the same principle:

Understand your skin first. Then choose what it needs.

When Should I Moisturize My Body?

One of the easiest habits is to moisturize after bathing.

Instead of waiting until your skin feels dry and tight later in the day, include body care to something you’re already doing.

Shower.

Moisturize.

Get dressed.

Simple.

Because I’ve learned something over the years:

The best skincare routine is the one you’ll actually follow consistently.

Body Skincare Doesn’t Need to Become Complicated

If you’re reading this thinking:

“Diana, I already have enough skincare steps!”

I hear you.

I’m not suggesting that we need a seven-step routine for our legs.

Start with one thing.

Maybe that’s applying body lotion after your shower.

Maybe it’s exfoliating occasionally when your skin feels rough.

Maybe it’s keeping Body Recovery Mist handy and giving your arms and legs a quick mist when they feel dry.

The goal isn’t perfection.

It’s awareness and consistency.

Healthy Skin Doesn’t Stop at Your Jawline

This may be the biggest lesson I’ve learned from our recent body-skincare conversations.

For years, I gave most of my skincare attention to the part everyone sees first, my face.

But the skin on my arms, hands, legs, elbows and feet has carried me through the same 77 years.

It deserves care too.

And that’s really what Be Ageless means to me.

I’m not trying to erase my age.

I’m taking care of myself at the age I am today.

We’re not trying to erase the years. We’re taking care of the skin that’s carried us through them.

So if you’ve been giving your face all the attention while forgetting everything below your jawline, you’re certainly not alone.

Start small.

Pay attention to what your skin is telling you.

And remember:

You don’t have to do everything today. You just need to start.

With gratitude,

Diana Winsor
