Dull Skin as We Age: Why We Lose Our Glow and What Helps

Dull Skin as We Age: Why We Lose Our Glow and What Helps

Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought:

“Where did my glow go?”

You’re certainly not alone.

As we age, we may notice that our skin doesn’t have quite the same radiance it once did. It might look a little dull or tired. Texture may seem rougher or uneven. Makeup may not sit quite the way it used to.

It’s tempting to think we need a brighter foundation or a little more highlighter.

But sometimes the answer isn’t about what we’re putting on top of our skin.

It’s about understanding what’s happening within our skin.

Why Does Skin Look Duller as We Age?

Our skin is constantly renewing itself.

New skin cells are created, older cells move toward the surface, and eventually those older surface cells are shed.

But that renewal process changes as we age.

When older surface cells aren’t shed as efficiently, they can contribute to skin that appears rougher, duller and less radiant.

Other factors can contribute too, including sun exposure, environmental stress, dehydration and lifestyle.

So when we’re trying to bring back healthy-looking radiance, there isn’t necessarily one magic solution.

I like to look at the bigger picture.

Gentle Exfoliation

Think about looking through a window with a layer of dust on it.

The light hasn’t disappeared. It’s simply harder to see through the buildup.

Our skin can be a little like that.

Removing some of the older surface cells through appropriate exfoliation can help reveal smoother, fresher-looking skin underneath.

But there’s an important word here:

Gentle.

Especially as we age, more exfoliation isn’t necessarily better.

We’re not trying to scrub mature skin into submission.

Hydration Matters

Sometimes dull-looking skin is also thirsty skin.

Well-hydrated skin tends to appear plumper, smoother and more luminous.

That’s why hydration has become such an important part of my own skincare routine.

And remember, hydration and moisturization aren’t exactly the same thing.

Hydration helps provide water to the skin, while moisturization helps soften and condition the skin and reduce moisture loss.

Healthy-looking mature skin can benefit from both.

Support Your Skin Barrier

Our skin barrier helps protect us from the outside world while helping keep precious moisture inside.

As we age, that barrier can become more vulnerable to dryness and environmental stress.

Supporting it with appropriate skincare can help skin feel more comfortable and look healthier.

Don’t Forget Antioxidants

Environmental stress is another piece of the dull-skin puzzle.

Antioxidant ingredients, including Vitamin C, can help support brighter, more radiant-looking skin while helping defend against environmental stressors.

This is one reason I believe skincare is about more than correcting something we see in the mirror.

It’s also about supporting and protecting our skin every day.

Support Healthy-Looking Skin Renewal

This brings me to something that has been part of my own skincare story for years.

SenePlex+.

SenePlex+ is SeneGence’s proprietary skincare complex designed to support the skin’s natural renewal process.

In an independent 20-day clinical study involving 33 women ages 19 to 65, SenePlex+ was studied for its effect on skin-cell renewal.

The study reported 100% cell renewal achieved in 18 days compared with the control, along with a 35.7% increase in cell renewal.

That’s the story behind the 18 days you’ve probably heard me talk about.

What About the Results We Can See?

SenePlex+ has also been studied as part of a skincare regimen.

In an eight-week study involving 32 participants, the regimen included:

3-in-1 Cleanser Normal to Dry

DayTime Moisturizer Normal to Dry

Evening Moisturizer Normal to Dry

Reported improvements included:

96% improvement in brightness and luminosity

80% improvement in skin firmness

71% improvement in texture and smoothness

59% improvement in skin collagen/plumpness

56% improvement in skin-tone evenness

And there’s something about that study I particularly love.

Look at the routine.

Cleanse. Moisturize during the day. Moisturize at night.

It wasn’t complicated.

Start With the Basics

With so many skincare products available today, it’s easy to think we need everything.

We don’t.

I believe in starting with a good basic routine, understanding what your skin needs and then adding targeted products when there’s a reason for them.

That approach is especially important to me when I’m helping women who haven’t had a skincare routine before.

You don’t need ten new products on your bathroom counter tomorrow morning.

You need a place to start.

My Own SenePlex+ Story

This is also where the science becomes personal for me.

I’ve consistently used SeneGence skincare powered by SenePlex+ for years.

You’ve probably seen my before-and-after pictures.

They’re my real skin and my real skincare journey.

I don’t share them to promise that someone else’s results will look exactly like mine. Everyone’s skin, lifestyle and circumstances are different.

I share them because they help explain why I’m still so passionate about taking care of my skin.

At 77, I’m not trying to look 27.

I want healthy-looking, vibrant skin at the age I am today.

So, Where Did Your Glow Go?

Maybe it isn’t really gone.

Your skin may need a little help with:

Renewal.

Exfoliation.

Hydration.

Barrier support.

Antioxidant protection.

And perhaps most importantly:

Consistency.

We’re not trying to erase the years.

We’re taking care of the skin that’s carried us through them.

And if all of this leaves you thinking:

“Okay Diana, but where do I start?”

That’s exactly the conversation I love having.

You don’t have to do everything today.

You just need to start.

Be Ageless. Be Confident. Be You.
