Has Your Favourite Lip Colour Stopped Working for You?

Why the colours we love can look different as we age, and how to find shades that make us feel fabulous.

Have you ever reached for a lipstick you’ve worn for years, looked in the mirror and thought, “Why doesn’t this look quite the same anymore?”

You’re not imagining things!

Our colouring, our skin and even our personal preferences can change over time. And sometimes a shade we’ve loved for decades just doesn’t give us that same wonderful feeling.

But here’s what I want you to know.

It doesn’t mean you’re too old to wear that colour. And it certainly doesn’t mean you have to give up your favourite red lipstick!

At 77, I still love experimenting with makeup. In fact, I think one of the joys of getting older is having the confidence to wear what makes us happy.

Let’s explore why our favourite lip colours sometimes seem to change — and what we can do about it.

1. Our Colouring Changes Over Time

Think about the changes you’ve noticed over the years.

Perhaps your hair has become silver or white. Maybe you’ve stopped colouring it, or you’ve noticed changes in your skin tone.

Even the natural pigmentation of our lips can change.

All of these things can influence how a particular lip colour looks against our face.

A bright pink that once looked perfect might now feel a little too cool. Or a colour you never considered wearing before might suddenly look beautiful!

The secret isn’t necessarily to change your favourite colour. Sometimes it’s simply about finding a different version of it.

2. Understanding Warm and Cool Colours

One of the things I love about studying colour theory is discovering how small differences in colour can make such a big impact.

Some shades lean warmer, with peach, coral or orange influences.

Others lean cooler, with blue, rose or berry undertones.

And many colours sit somewhere in between.

But here’s something important.

Colour theory is a guide, not a rulebook!

Just because someone tells you a particular colour isn’t your ideal shade doesn’t mean you can’t wear it.

If you love it and it makes you feel confident, that’s worth celebrating.

I always encourage women to experiment rather than feel limited by rules.

3. Sometimes It’s About Depth and Intensity

Have you ever tried two shades that looked almost identical in their containers, only to discover they looked completely different on your lips?

One might be softer and more muted.

The other might be brighter, deeper or more intense.

And those differences can completely change the finished look.

If your favourite pink isn’t making you happy anymore, perhaps you need a warmer pink, a softer rose or a slightly deeper berry.

If you’ve always loved red, there’s no reason to stop wearing it!

There are beautiful reds in so many different tones and intensities.

You don’t have to give up colour as you age. You just need to find the colours that make you feel like YOU.

4. Don’t Forget About Your Lips

As we get older, our lips may become drier, and their natural definition can become less noticeable.

That can affect how our lip colour looks and feels.

A few simple habits can make a difference:

  • Keep your lips comfortably hydrated.
  • Apply colour to clean, properly prepared lips, following the directions for your chosen product.
  • Experiment with different shades and finishes.
  • Consider using a lip liner or a more defined application if you want to emphasize your lip shape.

And remember, there is no rule that says mature women must wear only light colours or avoid bold lipstick.

Some days I love a softer look.

Other days? Bring on the colour!

5. Why I Love Helping Women Discover LipSense

When I first discovered SeneGence, LipSense was one of the products that caught my attention.

And after all these years, I still love helping women explore the wonderful world of lip colour.

What I enjoy most isn’t simply showing someone a lipstick.

It’s listening to what she likes, understanding her colouring and lifestyle, and helping her discover something that makes her smile when she looks in the mirror.

Some women want an easy everyday shade.

Others are looking for something special for an evening out.

And some are ready to try a colour they’ve admired for years but never felt brave enough to wear.

I love those moments!

6. Making Lip Colour Shopping a Little Easier

Let’s face it. When you’re looking at a large selection of beautiful lip colours, choosing just one can feel overwhelming.

That’s one of the reasons I created my Curated LipSense Collections.

Rather than leaving you to sort through all the choices on your own, I’ve brought together collections to help you explore different colour possibilities.

Whether you’re drawn to soft everyday shades, pretty pinks, beautiful berries or statement reds, there’s something fun about discovering a new combination.

And if you’re not sure where to start, that’s where I come in.

I love helping women find colours that suit their preferences, their colouring and, most importantly, their personalities.

Beautiful Colour Has No Age Limit

If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this week’s Product Spotlight, it’s this:

You are never too old to enjoy makeup, experiment with colour or try something new.

At 77, I have no intention of putting away my favourite lip colours simply because I’ve celebrated a few more birthdays!

Makeup should be fun.

It should help us express ourselves.

And it should make us feel good about the wonderful women we are today.

We’re not trying to turn back the clock.

We’re celebrating the faces, the stories and the lives we’ve lived.

And sometimes, a beautiful lip colour is the perfect finishing touch.

Helping women understand their skin, simplify beauty, embrace wellness, and age with confidence.
