Has Your Eye Makeup Stopped Working for You? Simple Eyeshadow Tips for Mature Eyes

Have you ever put on your eye makeup exactly the way you’ve done it for years and suddenly thought:
Why doesn’t this look the same anymore?
You’re not imagining it.
As we age, the skin around our eyes changes. Our eyelids may become softer, our crease may look different, our eyes may appear a little more hooded or deep-set, and techniques that worked beautifully for us years ago may not give us the same result today.
But here’s what I want you to know:
That doesn’t mean you have to stop wearing eye makeup.
It doesn’t mean you have to give up colour.
And it certainly doesn’t mean you have to give up shimmer or glitter!
At 77, I wear all three.
The secret isn’t necessarily changing what you love.
Sometimes it’s simply changing how you apply it.
Start With Placement
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned about eye makeup is that placement can make more difference than the colour itself.
Instead of worrying about complicated palettes and wondering where five or six different colours are supposed to go, I like to keep things simple.
My basic formula is:
BASE → TRANSITION → ACCENT
BASE
This is your starting shade.
I generally use a lighter colour to create a soft foundation for the rest of my eye look.
TRANSITION
This is where we begin adding definition.
A transition shade helps the colours flow together rather than looking like separate stripes of colour.
For mature or hooded eyes, you may find that bringing this colour slightly higher allows it to remain visible when your eyes are open.
ACCENT
Now we add dimension and personality.
This can be deeper, brighter, shimmery or even glittery.
Yes, I said glittery.
There is no birthday when someone comes to your door and confiscates your shimmer.
You do you.
Blend Differently, Too
Blending is another small change that can make a big difference.
I like using a fluffy brush and small circular motions, working gradually rather than applying a lot of colour at once.
Start light.
Blend.
Then build if you want more intensity.
And when I’m using glitter, I prefer to tap it into place rather than sweep it across the eyelid.
You have much more control over where that beautiful sparkle ends up.
What About Creasing?
This is especially important with mature eyelids.
One reason I’ve used ShadowSense for years is its crème-to-powder formula.
I can blend and work with it while I’m applying it, and then it sets to a soft powder finish designed for crease-free wear.
I often describe SeneGence makeup as “skincare with pigment.”
I love knowing I’m not simply adding colour to my face. I’m choosing products formulated with skincare ingredients too.
Three Colours Can Do More Than You Think
This week I created two very different looks using the same simple three-step formula.
My Pink/Mauve Look
Pink Frost → Base
Mulberry → Transition
Rustic Brown → Accent
But I didn’t stop there.
I also used Mulberry as my blush and Rustic Brown underneath my eye as liner.
Three shades helped me create almost an entire colour look.
My Neutral Look
For something softer and more neutral, I used:
Sandstone Pearl → Base
Coastal Shimmer → Transition
French Toast → Accent
Same method.
Completely different look.
That’s why I love teaching the technique first.
Once you understand Base → Transition → Accent, you can change the colours to suit your colouring, your personality and even your mood.
Can Mature Women Wear Shimmer?
Absolutely.
I think this is one of the biggest misconceptions about makeup as we get older.
You may decide to change where you place shimmer or how much you use, but your age doesn’t automatically determine your makeup.
Some days I want a very natural eye.
Sometimes I want Soft Glam.
And sometimes…
Bring on the glitter.
At 77, I’m not interested in a list of makeup rules telling women what they’re no longer allowed to wear.
I’m much more interested in helping women discover what makes them feel beautiful and confident now.
What If I Don’t Know Which Colours Go Together?
This is exactly why I’ve started creating curated ShadowSense combinations.
I have a large selection of ShadowSense shades in my own inventory, and instead of asking you to look through dozens of colours and figure everything out yourself, I can help.
Tell me whether you’re a:
Natural
Soft Glam
or
Glam
girl.
Or show me colours you already love.
I’ll help you put together a Base → Transition → Accent combination from the shades I have available.
No complicated palette.
No wondering where everything goes.
Just three shades and a simple technique you can actually use.
Your Eyes Haven’t Stopped Working. Your Technique May Just Need an Update.
That’s really the lesson I want you to take away from this week.
If the eye makeup you’ve worn for years suddenly doesn’t seem to work anymore, don’t assume you’re too old for eye makeup.
Your eyes have changed.
Your technique can change with them.
Experiment with placement.
Blend a little differently.
Try bringing your transition colour slightly higher.
Tap on your shimmer.
And most importantly, wear what makes you feel good.
Because makeup should still be fun.
At 77, mine certainly is.
You do you.
