Over ten years ago, I placed my first SeneGence order.

It included three LipSense colours, a Gloss and Ooops! Remover. Tucked inside was also a tiny sample of Climate Control.

I thought I was simply trying a lipstick that promised to stay on longer. I had no idea that one order would lead to better-looking skin, renewed confidence, wonderful friendships, a business I love and an incredible community of women.

LipSense brought me to SeneGence. Climate Control made me stay.

Today, as I celebrate my tenth anniversary, I want to answer one of the questions I am asked most often:

What exactly is LipSense?

LipSense is not applied like conventional lipstick. It is a long-lasting liquid lip-colour system consisting of three important parts:

• LipSense colour
• LipSense Moisturizing Gloss
• Ooops! Lip Colour Remover

The current official LipSense formula is described by SeneGence as waterproof, kiss-resistant and transfer-resistant, with wear of up to 18 hours. Colours can also be layered together to create customized combinations.

What Joni Rogers Explains About LipSense

One of the most helpful LipSense presentations I remember watching featured Joni Rogers in SeneGence’s The Beauty Is in the Blend: Iconic LipSense.

Although it was originally presented as education, the information is helpful for anyone wanting to understand why LipSense is different.

The most important thing to know is that LipSense is a system, rather than simply a tube of lip colour.

The colour is applied in thin layers and allowed to set. Moisturizing Gloss is then applied over the colour to seal it and provide a comfortable, hydrated finish.

The Gloss is not an optional extra. It is an important part of how the LipSense system is intended to be worn.

How to Apply LipSense Correctly

Correct application makes a tremendous difference.

Step 1: Begin with clean, dry lips

Remove lipstick, balm, foundation, skincare or anything oily from your lips.

Your lips should be completely clean and dry before you begin.

Step 2: Shake the LipSense colour

Shake the tube vigorously before applying it. This helps blend the formula properly.

Step 3: Apply three thin layers

Keep your lips slightly apart.

Apply the colour from one corner of your lip to the other in one direction. Avoid rubbing the applicator backwards and forwards.

Allow each thin layer to set for approximately three seconds before applying the next layer.

Do not press or rub your lips together while the colour is setting.

Step 4: Seal with Gloss

After the third layer has set, apply LipSense Moisturizing Gloss.

The Gloss seals the colour and adds moisture and shine. It can be reapplied throughout the day whenever your lips need refreshed moisture. 

Why Does LipSense Need Gloss?

LipSense colour and LipSense Gloss are designed to work together.

The long-lasting colour provides the staying power, while the Gloss gives your lips moisture and the finish you prefer.

Depending on the look you want, you can choose finishes such as:

• Glossy
• Matte
• Pearl
• Shimmer

You can also change the appearance of the same LipSense colour simply by changing the Gloss worn over it.

That makes the system incredibly versatile.

How Do You Remove LipSense?

LipSense is designed to stay in place, so an appropriate remover is an important part of the system.

Ooops! Remover can be used:

• To correct a small mistake during application
• To clean around the lip line
• To change your LipSense colour
• To remove your colour at the end of the day

SeneGence describes Ooops! as a non-drying, oil-based remover designed specifically for long-lasting LipSense colour. 

Can You Mix LipSense Colours?

Yes, and this is one of my favourite things about LipSense.

You are not limited to wearing one shade at a time. You can layer different colours to create a combination that is uniquely yours.

For example, you could wear:

• A deeper colour on the first layer
• A softer colour on the second
• A shimmer or lighter colour on the third

Changing the order can create an entirely different result.

This is why three LipSense colours can provide far more than three looks.

My Best LipSense Application Tips

After wearing and demonstrating LipSense for ten years, these are the tips I share most often:

Use very thin layers.

More product does not create better staying power. Thin, even layers work best.

Keep your lips apart.

Allow each layer to set before your lips touch.

Apply in one direction.

Do not move the applicator backwards and forwards like conventional lip gloss.

Do not skip the Gloss.

The Gloss completes the system and keeps your lips feeling comfortable.

Reapply Gloss when needed.

You do not normally need to reapply the colour, but you can refresh the Gloss throughout the day.

Give yourself a little practice.

LipSense application feels different at first, but it quickly becomes second nature.
